World Cup - Day 2 Round Up
World Cup Gallery

Day 2 of the championships saw our competitors suffer more disappointment as one after the other our efforts were not met we the results we wanted.

First up was Amy Kehoe drawn against Russia in the Pattern event. Despite her usual polished performance, we were surprised to see the result go the wrong way. One of those unfortunate and unexplainable decisions that sometimes leave those spectating wondrously confused.

A complication arose with Matthew and Sarah Godden both called to their respective sparring events at the same time giving team coach Antony Panteli the best workout he has had for a long time, as he raced from one end of the arena to the other to make sure each competitor was fairly represented.

Sarah managed to win through to the quarterfinal with an outstanding first round against Israel. Sadly the superior fitness of her Russian opponent was evident as Sarah bravely missed out on reaching the semi`s.

Stamina was not a problem for veteran Matthew however, who came alive in the under 63kg division to tear through three rounds to reach his quarter finals, beating Argentina twice and Russia once along the way. Finally the might of Argentina caught up with him, and although beaten, Mat was certainly not defeated, gaining much admiration for an absolutely inspirational performance.

Kieran Hook was decidedly out reached in his match up entering as possibly, and unfortunately, the smallest in his division. Undeterred Kieran gave it his all, but was justly out reached by his Peter Crouch-like opponent.

Surprise of the day came in the form of Miren Patel, who having assured Mr. Panteli that he had been working on his fitness in his preparations leading up to the championships, stepped on the floor to actually prove it.

Meeting Argentina in his first round, Miren put in the performance of his life to score head-shot after head-shot to completely dominate his first round opponent, breezing comfortably in to the next round. Sadly, the achievement was not to be repeated meeting an outstanding opponent from Scotland in the next round who took an early initiative, leaving Miren with an insurmountable task to catch up and make it through to the semis.

One more chance for a medal tomorrow as Sarah Godden vies for Gold in the final of the Junior 2nd Dan patterns, with Amy Kehoe and Shane Barber still to play in the team events on Sunday.
